A Supported Living service is an ordinary home where adults with a learning disability, autism, and/or challenging behaviour may share the accommodation. Each person has their own individual tenancy for their room and shared areas. All utility bills are shared between those who live there, often significantly reducing any financial burdens. There is always staff within the service 24/7 to be able to deliver support in line with a person's identified needs.
Our support workers will help the person with disabilities to understand what their responsibilities are within their tenancy agreement. Support workers also help with cleaning , laundry, and maintenance of the home to ensure that a person is able to live as independently as possible.
Where a person lacks capacity to sign a tenancy agreement, this is usually done on their behalf with multi-disciplinary professional agreement or by a person who has legal lasting power of attorney to make such a decision.
We are able to help with management of finances, including budgeting skills, food shopping, saving for holidays etc. We also work closely with any legal appointee for finances to ensure that the person being supported has the correct benefit entitlements and can pay for their regular activities as well as rent, utilities and food.
If a person we support is able to manage their finances, or manage small amounts of their finances, then this is always our preferred option.
There is always a positive focus on outcome progression and each goal is specific to the individual being supported. We offer structured support to help with everything from cooking, cleaning, bill paying, finding paid employment and voluntary opportunities. Goals and outcomes are reviewed regularly with keyworkers to identify strengths, weaknesses, areas for progression and barriers to progression.
We always encourage those we support to have as much choice over what they want, and as much control as possible over what happens in their day to day lives.
Next steps are specific to the individual. Our organisational goal is for the people we support to move to more independent models of living such as wardened accommodation, their own flats or houses with domiciliary or minimal support. This is only done after a period of support where the person has gained the skills necessary to do this safely and confidently. Some people who may have complex disabilities may not be able to move into more independent models of living, although this is very much person specific.
